Hott Nu Disco Vids: Rivera, Nate and Jupiter

3 hott vids of a different kind

SUPER JUPITER - You Know

Mmmm, Ok, there's 2 skinny white guys from Norway trying to rollerskate on quads, they dress as if they raided the 70s section of a thrift shop, which is better? The video or the song, take your pick.

VERDICT: Silly video 70s style on a new wavish synth disco pop tune, tune is hot!

DADA Feat. SANDY RIVERA - Lollipop

Superstar dj/producer Sandy Rivera showing he can dance, sing (sort of), star in a stylish Euro 80s style video, accompanied by ladies of different flavors. He's so believable, some guys are posting jealous posts on YouTube.

VERDICT: Super catchy dance tune in a video that's as tasty as eye candy, pretty, classy and light.

ULTRA NATE - Love is the only ...

The buzz is supposed to be the Automatic video as I write this, if you're a disco soul, you'll be feeling this one better, so here's Ultra Nate in Old School diva mode (like 70s Gloria Gaynor) in a discotheque setting, very dark and floating in the air are ghosts of Sylvester and Patrick Cowley, you won't see them but you'll feel and ear 'em, I'm dead serious!

VERDICT: Intense, poignant, if you have a heartache, abstain!!!

Diana Ross, her birthday, the book

Diana has turned 63 last week, it isn't known if she blew candles or just took it easy.

For the 3rd time, biographer, TV reporter and journalist Randy Taraborrelli has written a biography of Diana Ross. It's out in the UK already but again, us stateside will have to wait, it can be pre-ordered at Amazon US. California based Taraborelli has written biographies on Madonna, Cher, Michael Jackson, Motown, Grace Kelly, Frank Sinatra, etc.

And yes, the disco years are covered, not as deeply as the Motown years, but it's all there.

If you did read "Call her Miss Ross" (published 1989), you'll recall the similarities between the real life Supremes and the Dreamgirls musical, quite striking! That is also discussed.

Diana Ross, an unauthorized biography is "Call her Miss Ross" revised, revisited and written from a different perpective, going deeper, augmented with new material and continuing where it left off from 1989 till the 00s.

Diana Ross is on tour now and the critics are unanimous, she's still the queen!

Some of the books mentionned above are out of print but they are available at your public library. Diana Ross also released 2 cds in the last 6 months

Female singer wanted by Mark Ronson

Mark needs a female singer to take on tour

Ronson urgently seeks to find a stylish female vocalist with presence, whom has a flexible range and expression which can express music that will go from the vocal stylings of Lily Allen, Amy Winehouse, and Santo Gold.

This would likely involve a good deal of touring globally around Mark's new album version. At present, the show is a 12-14 piece review all-star style party. Rehearsals start early May. Dates are throughout the Summer and Fall 2007. This is a very special opportunity with a strong vehicle for someone who has that certain magic and wants to enjoy making a bit of musical history with some great people.

If any of you think you fit the bill, or know someone who does, please forward MySpace links (no demos) where Mark and crew can hear them. Mark ask for serious responses only please.

Dreamgirls soundtrack take 2

The Dreamgirls Dance Project

Can't get enough of Dreamgirls? There's another Dreamgirls "soundtrack" around thanks to Rick Gianatos. Gianatos is from the "school" of the Moultons, Pettibones, Gibbons and al. He did disco mixes for Shalamar, Gene Chandler, most artists on AVI Records and many others in the late 70s. He also remixed and produced way into the 80s, 90s and 00s. If you collect disco records, you might have seen his name on the disco mix credit.

Dreamgirls Dance Project is "a dance interpretation of the best known tracks from the musical"

On the album, Gianatos gathered together key members of renowned female groups of the 1960s; Scherrie Payne, Lynda Lawrence, Cindy Birdsong of the Supremes, Hodges James and Smith, Merry Clayton and James Gilstrap.

Listen to the songs at the DreamGirls Dance Project website.

Tracklist:

1. Dreamgirls (Acapella)
2. Dreamgirls
3. Move
4. Steppin' To The Bed Side
5. Ain't No Party
6. I Am Changing
7. One Night Only
8. Hard To Say Goodbye, My Love
9. Dreamgirls (Scoulful Acapella)
10. One Night Only (1984 Dreamgirl Original Recipe Mix) (Uk Bonus Track)
11. One Night Only (Special Uk Tried And True Remix) (Uk Bonus Track)

Check it out at Amazon.com

New single and album by Dame Shirley Bassey in '007

Shirley Bassey to celebrate her 70th with style and music

Some might remember Shirley Bassey as the vocalist for the most memorable James Bond theme songs circa Sean Connery era. Others might remember the disco song she did with Chris Rhea in 1998 for the soundtrack of the Italian movie "La Passionne" - in which she starred as herself- , others got reacquainted with Dame Miss Bassey because they sang her songs at American Idol last week.

Shirley Bassey is coming up with a new album for her 70th anniversary slated for release in May 007. But we don't have to wait till then to savor the magic of Shirley Bassey both in Bond style and club style, long or short on her new single "The Living Tree". As usual, the Brits are picking up on it and here in corporate North America, we will never hear it on the radio.

Dame Shirley will be performing at the Glastonbury festival on Sunday June 24th 2007 in the "Living Legend" slot. The Arctic Monkeys, The Killers, The Who, Kaiser Chiefs and The Kooks are also part of the bill.

Nominee hosting a music award show = 1-2 trophies

I have not seen all award shows ever produced in the last 12 month, so wanna make this clear before you read further.

Is it me? or isn't it suspicious that everytime a nominee host an award show, they always leave with a trophy.

There should be a law that prohibits a nominee in hosting a show, cause in recent times I have never seen a nominee artist leave empty handed.

So until they implement this new rule, next time a nominee artist host a music award show, you can predict what's gonna happen before it happens.

Is it because some artist have big egos? or "the corporates" will never let artists from their stable, host a show if they don't win, simple! I assume it's more often the later.

Most blatant example was the Canadian Juno Awards 2007 on April 1st that was taped before broadcast.

So when is the next music award show and who will host it...

Free dance song for your portable player

Free song for your portable player courtesy of Anton Leuba

You like 80s/minimal synthesizer style sounds, a blase male voice, a melody that's danceable? Slightly cheesy maybe? DJs might want to mixmash it cause it sounds like a demo or not yet polished.

Anton Leuba has a gift for you. Now go get the gift and if you don't like it, then you can always pass it along.

And the next thing you know, it could grow on you or your friends, like it did for me.

Ford Fusion commercial, a record, a song or a car

It's all that!

Here's a cropped screen capture of a Ford commercial banner I clicked on last week while reading the news on a Canadian newspaper site. When you click on it, you end up on a Saturday Night Fever style dancefloor, 4 djs spinning turntables in unison and you have to figure out what you have to do next. It caught my attention, that's what effective advertising is all about.

So for those who think the only way to get attention is to show the female form, not that there is anything wrong with that, well, the reality is, that for some of us, cars are sexy, turntables, vinyl records, flat screens are sexy, you know material things. But not sexy in a reproductive sense, more like appealing.

No word on whether that vinyl record exist for real.

Mondo Disco in Paris

Dj extraordinaire Aisha and I had the best ever gig in Paris Saturday night March the 24th, playing fast tempo boogie all night long to an appreciating full house. Check out some of the action at ...
www.discolounge.net/discoqueer/24mars/.

At one point I did an impromptu lipsync to Night School's original version ( not the AVI 12") of "Do You Speak French?" , conducting a call and response session with the mostly male crowd going: hello girls, this your first French disco lesson, now how do you say "love"?, and they would all reply "L'amouuur!" in a chorus. How do you say caress? - caresser! How do you say sexy?"-Zexy! at which point I yanked my t-shirt up to a wild cheer...must have been screams of horror there as well. But hey, what's done is done. Blame that and the 2 times I pushed the wrong button on the flu and too many 500mg painkillers.

And what sounds went down well along with the Night School? "Drum Dream" by Krenzell, The Scherrie Payne version of "One Night Only", Ritchie Family's "Summer Dance", Box-o-Lettes: "Feel Africa", Yellow Magic Ork: "Mad Pierrot", the Tom Moulton mix of Black Soul's "Mangous Ye", "One For Me One for You" by la Bionda, "Ite Missa Est" by Martin Circus, Asha Puthli's stunning "1001 Nights of Love (the fast version)", and naturally, "Volare" by Al Martino.

Aicha herself created a magnificently caleidoscopic soundscape with exotic percussion, familiar chants emerging from unexpected breaks, swirling violins rising higher and higher, all over a relentless euro beat pounding straight thru our skulls.
